GMiso — Generalized Misorientation Workbench

Version 1.0.0

MATLAB + MTEX 6.1.0 | MIT License | Chinese / English UI | 2026-10-16

【What it is】

GMiso (Generalized Misorientation) is an analysis workbench for EBSD orientation data, running on MATLAB with MTEX. It extends conventional misorientation into a unified generalized-misorientation framework for computing, visualizing, and interpreting slip misorientation, twin misorientation, and phase-transformation misorientation.

It connects crystallographic prediction with measured morphology: from grain reconstruction and boundary extraction, to slip/twin-system activation assessment, Schmid factors, m′ geometric matching, trace comparison, and phase-transformation relationship analysis — forming a complete analysis chain.

【Key capabilities】

·A unified framework for three misorientation types: slip misorientation (θS), twin misorientation, and phase-transformation misorientation (including Burgers and related relationships).

·Mechanical and geometric criteria: Schmid factors for slip and twin systems, m′ candidate slip-pair matching, and angular comparison between predicted and measured traces.

·Visualization and statistics: grain reconstruction and IPF maps, boundary-type distribution, GROD and scalar overlays, boundary query and statistics.

·Production-grade output: results can be exported as result.mat, CSV tables, Markdown reports, and figures; the interface supports Chinese and English.

【Installation】

1. Install MATLAB (R2024a recommended) and MTEX 6.1.0, and add the MTEX root folder to the MATLAB path.

2. Download and unzip the GMiso release package, then add the parent folder that contains +GMiso to the path:

addpath('D:/your/path/GMiso_v1.0.0'); % parent folder of +GMiso

Note: Do not apply genpath to the +GMiso package folder itself — doing so breaks MATLAB package-namespace resolution.

3. Verify: run gmiso at the command prompt. If the main interface opens, the installation is correct.

【Quick start】

ui = gmiso('CH'); % Chinese interface

ui = gmiso('English'); % English interface

For first use, the interactive workflow is recommended: import EBSD → confirm crystal structure and lattice constants → grain reconstruction → point or boundary analysis → review and export results. If no EBSD map is available, Euler-angle point pairs can be processed in batch.

【Important notes】

1. The built-in slip- and twin-system catalogs are fixed. The slip and twin systems for the four crystal structures (BCC / HCP / FCC / ORTH) are hard-coded in the source. Before analysis, you must verify that they match the true crystallographic data of the material under study; otherwise misorientation, trace-comparison, and Schmid-factor results are invalid.

The ORTH (orthorhombic) twin-system catalog is currently placeholder data copied from the slip-system catalog; it is not calibrated for any specific orthorhombic material. Twin-related results for orthorhombic phases are for workflow demonstration and methodological reference only and must not be used as a basis for materials conclusions. Future releases will supply actual orthorhombic twin data and will support user-defined slip planes/directions and twin planes/directions.

·Four settings must match the experiment: crystal structure, lattice constants, load direction, and surface normal. An error in any one of them makes the results meaningless.

·Interpretation limits: the Schmid factor and m′ are geometric quantities and do not by themselves prove that plastic deformation occurred; an empty candidate set does not mean the angle is zero — diagnose the cause first.

·Figure-window tips: for precise picking (e.g., P1/P2), zoom in with the top-right zoom tool before clicking. To save a result figure, use the figure window's top-left File → Save / Save As (the in-interface “Save all” and “Save open figure only” buttons are not yet fully reliable).

·English interface: some button labels are truncated because English text is longer; hover the mouse over the control to see its full text in a tooltip.

Interface and analysis examples
Figure 1 Main interface: mode selection, data import, parameter settings, visualization, measurement, and result export are clearly separated.
Figure 2 Grain reconstruction and IPF map (TA1 titanium alloy): boundaries and orientations are shown together, forming the basis for subsequent point analysis.
Figure 3 Slip-system Schmid-factor results: variants are ranked by |SF|, with a slip-family summary.
Figure 4 Phase-transformation misorientation map under the Burgers relationship, demonstrating the phase-transformation analysis capability.
